Academic Math Syllabus

COURSE GOAL: 6th Grade Academic Math:
Students will learn to communicate mathematically and make connections within and outside mathematics as they develop conceptual understanding and solve problems. This course addresses all of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for grade 6 mathematics. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: The 5 P's - I expect you to: |
- BE PROMPT - Be here, and be on time. Your ideas are important and we desire to hear them and help them grow. We do not have a spare second to waste. However, we can't share in your ideas if you are not on time and present.
- BE PREPARED - We communicate, collaborate, create and share while problem solving and discovering new topics. Bring your math journals, homework, binder, pencils, erasers, notebook paper, expos, earbuds, and please B.Y.O.T. - Bring Your Own Technology
- BE PRODUCTIVE - Maximize your learning by staying on task, carefully listening to and following directions, and engage in class activities and discussions. Learn something today that you didn't know yesterday, and have fun doing it.
- BE POLITE - Be kind or neutral to everyone. Be patient with yourself and others. Be respectful to yourself, your teacher, your classmates and your classroom. Contribute to the community in a positive and uplifting manner.
- BE PASSIONATE - Jump into the class with both feet, not just for a grade but for your own growth. Be daring, be different, take risks. Discover something unexpected and create something you are proud of.
SUPPLIES: You will need the following supplies daily in math class.
In addition, it is suggested that all students bring their own headphones/earbuds for various computer activities we do in class.
Students may also bring their various electronic devices to class (BYOT - Bring your own technology) and we will use them appropriately to reach our learning goals. Students are expected to use those devices for learning only and when I permit their use in class.
GRADING POLICY:
YOU MUST SHOW YOUR WORK IN ORDER TO GET CREDIT!
LATE assignments will not receive full credit.
TUTORIALS:
SUPPLIES: You will need the following supplies daily in math class.
- 1.5 inch binder with 5-tab dividers TABS:
- Labeled Tabs: Warm-Up, Toolbox, Textbook, Practice, Graded
- 1 Subject Spiral for interactive notebooks
- 1 Composition book for journaling
- Loose leaf lined notebook paper & graph paper (optional)
- Pencils, Expo markers (Pencil Sharpener is preferred)

- 70% - Summative Assessments (Tests, Projects, Presentations) RETAKES ALLOWED
- 30% - Formative Assessments (Quizzes, Classwork, Homework, Warm-ups) RETAKES ARE NOT ALLOWED
YOU MUST SHOW YOUR WORK IN ORDER TO GET CREDIT!
- If a student has an excused absence, they have as many days as missed to turn in work.
- It is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to come to me to find out what was missed.
LATE assignments will not receive full credit.
- Only one RETAKE is allowed and must be done within 5 days of the graded assignment being returned.
- ONLY Students scoring below an 80 are eligible for a redo/retake.
- They can then earn up to a 80 on their second attempt. Retakes are done in a tutorial session.

Monday - Tuesday - and - Thursday 8:15 - 8:40 am
Thursday 3:45 - 4:15 pm
All Tutoring is by appointment only. Students can fill out a form in class and submit it to me.

TARDY PROCEDURES:
A student is tardy if he/she is not in the classroom when the bell stops ringing and does not have a pass.
School-wide Consequences are as follows:
* All detentions are served on Thursday afternoons
A student is tardy if he/she is not in the classroom when the bell stops ringing and does not have a pass.
School-wide Consequences are as follows:
- First Tardy ‐‐ Student receives a warning.
- Second Tardy – 30 minute Detention.
- Third Tardy – 1 hour Detention.
- Fourth Unexcused Tardy is a two hour after-school detention
- Five or more Unexcused Tardies per quarter, are a three hour after-school detention each occurrence
* All detentions are served on Thursday afternoons
